How to Handicap Horse Races - Handicapping Chalk

Chalk one key to Handicapping

I know a guy who routinely bets $60 mix and/or match tri’s with two favorites on the top. Usually when he hits he still loses.

I ask him why not bet on one of those top picks to win. No, he says it’s stupid to bet on chalk.

Actually, the saying, it’s stupid to bet on chalk has become a war cry at the local OTB. I say, don’t look gift horses in the mouth, never turn down easy money. People remember the long shot wins and tend to forget the short pays. Not all 3-5’s are good bets by a long shot.

I have a rule of thumb if a horse’s average Beyer is ten points better than all the other horses in the race – Bet Him!! And hard.

One hundred to win yielding a $60 profit is a good thing. It won’t make you a hero at the OTB, but it might make you a hero to your wife.

When looking through the horses in the race start with the favorite(chalk) try and determine if this horse is a false favorite. This is key to betting the race.
